Golf Fore the Girls raises $38,000 for Huntsville Hospital Foundation this year

On June 16, Deerhurst Resort’s Lakeside course was awash in pink for the 11th annual Golf Fore the Girls tournament. Yesterday, organizers announced that the sold-out event raised $38,092.13 for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.

The funds – which are raised through registration fees (about half support the cause while the other half pays a portion of tournament costs), a silent auction and sponsorships – support Diagnostic Imaging in the Mammography Department at Huntsville Hospital. Since 2010, the tournament has raised more than $200,000 for the hospital. “It’s really important to have the support from our girls,” said Katherine Craine, Executive Director for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation. “Their commitment makes a big difference.”

Twelve volunteers organize and run the event, including a core committee comprising chair Janet Markham, silent auction co-ordinator Marian Shaw, treasurer Reva Frame, sponsorship co-ordinator Ramona Sullivan, and communications co-ordinator Johanne Rae Stewart. The committee is new this year, having replaced long-standing members who retired last year.

“This was our most successful tournament yet for funds raised,” said Markham. “It’s cool to see that after 11 years both golfers and sponsors are behind this.”

The 122 golfers competed for various prizes on the course and received swag and treats along the way.

The 2017 Golf Fore The Girls Champions were Chantelle Armstrong, Helena Renwick, Lisa Kidd, and Denise Penney with a score of 61. Costume winners were the “Brewing Up a Cure” team – Brywn Perera, Nicola Mackay, Melissa Key, and Kristin Adams. (See more photos of costumes from the event on Doppler here.)

Golfers who out-drove pro Todd Thomson, also know as Dr. Golf, on hole 11 were entered to win five weeks of lessons. Mary Beth Jarvis’ name was drawn from those 10 names. Maureen Mountford won the putting contest sponsored by Scotiabank after her name was drawn from a four-way tie.

One of the tournament’s major sponsors – Brokerlink – wrapped up their five-year commitment to the event this year, having contributed $17,500 to the cause along with swag and prizes. “(Wendy McConnell from Brokerlink) said it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of her life,” said Markham. “It is now our goal to find a new partner to support breast cancer awareness and breast health in Huntsville, hopefully someone looking to experience the same benefits of being involved as Wendy did.” In addition to the lead sponsor, sponsorships at all levels are welcome.

The committee is also seeking one more core member to help with the event for next year. If you are interested in being involved as a committee member, volunteer or sponsor, email [email protected].
