Girlfriends’ Getaway Weekend adds some glam to the holidays for low-income women

Holiday time is party time but not every woman has the extra funds to add a new dress to her wardrobe for those special occasions.

Thanks to attendees and organizers of the Girlfriends’ Getaway Weekend inaugural fashion show at Deerhurst Resort, local women will have some low-cost party wear options this holiday season.

It was the brainchild of fashion show co-host, Mel Kelso: put out a call to the Girlfriends for donations of gently used cocktail dresses that would then be donated to the Salvation Army for distribution to women who need them.

Kelso used to work in the fashion industry in Toronto and has produced fashion shows in the past.

“(Girlfriends’ Getaway Weekend) is very lush and luxurious. I thought it would be nice to balance that out with a generous spirit of some sort. So I thought in the spirit of glamour and sparkle and shine in this holiday season, if these ladies could look into their closets and find some little bit of glamour that they just don’t wear any more, they could bring that and we could spread some cheer in Muskoka. If you’re going to shop here, maybe you could leave something here for those in need.”

Forty-six dresses were donated by the Deerhurst Girlfriends that weekend.

The dress drive wasn’t the only charitable effort of the weekend. The Think Pink silent auction raised $2,300 for the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.

Girlfriends’ Getaway Weekend attracted 900 women to Deerhurst Resort.
