Former Port Sydney resident heats up the track at time trials in Canmore

The old adage skiers are made in the summer held true for former Port Sydney resident Collin Cameron: his off season training is reaping rewards.

The men’s national Para Nordic team member competed in the World Cup selection time trial races in Canmore, Alberta this week.

Nordiq Canada’s Para Nordic team hosted the time trial.

Along with athletes from Ontario, Nova Scotia, Quebec, PEI, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, there were also athletes from Great Britain, the United States, and Japan.

On Wednesday, Nov. 24, the first day of the two-day event, athletes took on the 5km sitski competition and 5km classic technique, both at the Frozen Thunder ski track at Canmore Nordic Centre.

Cameron took first place by a significant time over the American skier.

Huntsville Nordic alumna and Carleton Ravens Nordic alumna Emily Jones guided for Sudburian visually impaired athlete Amanda Provan.

Christina Picton, national team member from Font Hill, finished second in the women’s sitski category. Kyle Barber, also a national team member from Sudbury, finished fifth in the standing category.

Two other Ontario athletes vying for their first chance at the coveted spots to represent Canada were Sudbury native Logan Lariviere and Fergus resident Madison Mullins, both in the visually impaired categories.

In the freestyle technique on Thursday, November 25, with a longer distance of 7.5km, Cameron bested the second-place finisher from the USA by 50 seconds in the men’s sitski to claim his second consecutive victory.

Cameron will be preparing for the Beijing Paralympics in the next couple of months. In his Paralympic Games debut in 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, he won three bronze medals.

Fifteen-year-old Logan Lariviere’s efforts in the standing skiing competition earned the opportunity to compete in next week’s World Cup Para Nordic races to be held in Canmore.

Madison Mullins from Fergus, who is 14 years of age, has caught the eye of Paralympic coaching staff as a future prospect for the next generation team.

The team returns to Ontario to prepare for future events.

Lead coach for the provincial Para Nordic team, John Cowan, was pleased with the results of the Ontario athletes in attendance.
