Former Hospice Huntsville employee honoured with prestigious Ontario award

Hospice Huntsville is proud to share that Jane Weiland, who retired from Hospice Huntsville in 2024, has been awarded the 2025 June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism (JCOAAV), one of Ontario’s most prestigious honours recognizing extraordinary volunteer leadership and impact.

Presented annually by the Government of Ontario, the June Callwood Award celebrates individuals and organizations whose dedication and contributions have significantly improved the well-being of communities across the province.  Jane Weiland was honoured last week at a ceremony in Huntsville, where she received a commemorative statue and a certificate signed by the Premier of Ontario and the Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism. The presentation was made by Parry Sound–Muskoka MPP, Graydon Smith.

“Volunteers are essential to protecting Ontario and building stronger communities,” said Graham McGregor, Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism. “This year’s recipients have gone above and beyond, and we are deeply grateful for their service to make Ontario a better place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Jane Weiland is being recognized in the category of Excellence in Volunteer Management – Individual for her eleven years of service with Hospice Huntsville. Throughout her tenure, Jane Weiland was the heart of Hospice Huntsville’s programs, leading both the Visiting Volunteer and Grief and Bereavement programs.  She introduced vital Complementary Therapies and built partnerships with hospitals and care homes to ensure no one faced the end of life alone. Her leadership, compassion, and innovation profoundly shaped hospice care in her community

Although she retired in 2024, Jane’s legacy continues to be felt daily throughout our programs, volunteers, and the individuals and families we serve.

“Thank you to Hospice Huntsville for the nomination for the June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Volunteerism,” said Jane Weiland. “It is an honour to be nominated and selected as a recipient.  It was a privilege to work with a team of volunteers who are dedicated and passionate about the support they provide to Hospice Huntsville and our community. They made each day a joy to come to work.”

Named in honour of the late author, journalist, and social activist June Callwood, the award acknowledges up to 25 recipients each year for their innovation, leadership, and meaningful contributions to Ontario communities.

Hospice Huntsville extends our deepest congratulations to Jane on this well-deserved recognition. We are grateful for her years of service and lasting impact on hospice care in our community.
