Premiers from across the country arrived in Huntsville’s Deerhurst Resort this morning, where they’re expected to stay until Wednesday.
On the agenda are issues such as emergency management, energy security, sovereignty and national security, Canada-U.S. relations, international and internal trade, labour mobility, immigration, health, and public safety.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is the chair of the Council of the Federation and has a cottage in the area, said, “welcome to Huntsville, a great town.”
Ford is expected to host a special dinner at his cottage for the provincial leaders this evening.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to hold a separate meeting with the premiers on Tuesday. Following that meeting, the PM is scheduled to depart, and the premiers will resume discussions on various topics.
The Council of the Federation rotates the chair position annually among the premiers, with the deputy chair automatically becoming the chair each July. Since Ford assumed the role in July 2024, his term as chair will end in July 2025, and Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz will become the chair.
A closing news conference is planned for the afternoon of July 23.

Another chance to eat and drink on the taxpayer.
Hope this note will be accepted.
Over the last couple of months , I have noticed the unhappiness that is creeping into the letters and authors here. We are going through some new hard difficult times mainly due to an American politician.
We are seeing Canada digging deep into our own resources. Working to survive.
I am now reading about the inappropriate negative remarks about the meeting in Huntsville involving many of the Canadian leaders.
Please give all of those leaders a chance to pull us out of the mud. Please welcome those leaders at the meetings.
Support them and not lower your remarks to criticize the road closures etc. that will happen in order to have the much needed gathering of our leaders. It will be a lot worse for Canada and democracy if the leaders fail than road closures.
Thank you.
There was a time I’m sure, when the collection of world or local dignitaries in my/our town would give one a reason to feel somewhat chuffed or proud. Guess I’ve seen too many such meetings and read of so many more that the whole process has lost its’ glitter. And these meetings seem to accomplish so little.
Good on Prime Minister Carney, Premier Ford and the rest for meeting. Optics mostly in my opinion. But I hold little hope of much being accomplished. A few drinks (little pre-mixed hi-balls anyone? This is Ontario). Some good food; Deerhurst can provide that. Any guess as to what this is costing us? And a lot of pointless talk about a deal with a man who couldn’t hold a promise long enough to wonder if he had one. Trump would likely deny he had a deal if he thought he hadn’t won. Or whatever it is he thinks/ dreams/ imagines.
We were alerted to more road closures/ restrictions because of increased security, but none of this will affect the snarling monster trucks downtown or the just for the hell of it U-turns in the face of traffic on Main Street. Nobody will be working on the trashing of outhouses or the senseless vandalism. Deerhurst isn’t downtown.
Brunel will be spared this time. Others will face the inconvenience as has been mentioned here on Doppler.
There is one way that this could have been a hoot. Wrap all these dignitaries in spandex, give them a bike and close Brunel. Just around the block would do it. Wouldn’t even matter who won.
Hell!! That I’d pay to see.
