The Huntsville Hurricanes hosted a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Huntsville High School for students in grades 5-8. New this year, the tournament opened up registration to players aged 17+ which allowed parents and adult players within the community to participate.
The tournament is the main fundraiser for the Hurricanes organization and helps to promote its basketball program.
Co-ordinators Samantha Garrod and Scott Barker said, “This event exceeded our expectations – we had such a good turn-out for the amount of time we had to plan it.” It was the biggest turn out to date and Coach Samantha hopes that more participants will get hyped for the next large Hurricane event in the fall of 2017. Watch for details.
Saturday morning had the divisions of boys and girls grade 5/6 and boys and girls 7/8 compete against Hurricane players as well as other children from other organizations.
“They all came together and had a great day filled with a lot of fun basketball, and really at the end of the day that is all we wanted, for the kids to play the sport we all love,” said Garrod. “It was also great to see the older senior boys volunteer and then play. They are such great role models for the younger ages and it was good for the kids to see them give back to the organization.”
This event would not have been possible without its volunteers. The co-ordinators gave a huge thank you to Martha Lapp, Mark Van Kooy, Chris Nikiforuk, Carrie Sykes, Peter Smith, the Hurricanes Senior boys and Annie Be.
See you all in the fall of 2017 for the next tournament.
