Local Indigenous rights activist Joyce Jonathan Crone’s film, Red Girl Rising, filmed in Huntsville, has been nominated at an international film festival.
The 30th Red National International Film Festival takes place this weekend in Beverly Hills.
The 12-minute short, created by director Anishinaabe artist Kim Stadfeld and Haudenosaunee filmmaker Faith Howe, follows Joyce Jonathan Crone, a Mohawk matriarch, retired teacher, and activist from Huntsville, as she works to foster understanding and bridge gaps in Indigenous education.
The documentary is one of 55 films nominated —all directed by Indigenous women.
