Exmples of your responses to Michaels Cuebid

Last week we introduced the Michaels Cuebid responses to the opponent’s opening. The Michaels bid is all about taking advantage of a partnership fit in one or both of two major suits.

This week we have examples of your hands where you consider which response to use for a Michaels Cuebid after your right-hand opponent opens. You have the Michaels agreement with your partner.

Case 1:

Spades xxx

Hearts AKxxx

Diamonds AKxxx

Clubs void

Case 1: Your right hand opponent opens One Spade. You have a big hand with the other major. You Cuebid Michaels, Two Spades. Your bid shows at least a five-five hand with Hearts and an unknown minor. You could be weak. Partner will support a Heart fit. If partner has no Heart fit, to find out your minor he bids 2NT and you bid Three Diamonds. With your strong hand, you will proceed depending on partner’s bid and the vulnerability.

Case 2:

Spades xxxxx

Hearts xxxxx

Diamonds A

Clubs Kx

Case 2: Your right hand opponent opens One Diamond. With five-five in Spades and Hearts, even with a weak hand (less than ten points), you Cuebid Michaels, Two Diamonds. Your bid shows at least five-five in the majors. Partner will reply his best major knowing that you are five-five in the majors. You have a weak hand so unless partner pushes you, just PASS. You have said all you have to say.

Case 3:

Spades void

Hearts KQx

Diamonds xxxxx

Clubs Axxxx

Case 3: Your right hand opponent opens One Spade. You do not have a Michaels bid but you have an Unusual 2NT bid which we will discuss in two weeks.
