Duplicate bridge results and tip: forcing bids

By Valerie Rhead

FORCING BIDS

Last week we talked about the strong two-club opening bid and how it was forcing. There are other forcing bids. A new suit bid by responder is forcing (for one round.) For example: You open one diamond and your partner responds one heart. You must bid again. Your partner has not as yet limited his hand. He may have six points or he may have twenty points. If your opening bid is minimum (12 to 14 points), you will limit your hand with a response of one no-trump or a rebid of your six-card suit or the bid of a new suit at the lowest level. But, you must bid something. Your partner now becomes captain with full knowledge of the approximate shape and value of your hand.

Be aware, however, that a new suit by opener, that is not a jump bid, is not forcing. The only forcing bid available to the opener at this point is a strong jump-shift showing eighteen or more points after which responder must bid again.

Another time when you must not pass is if your partner makes an artificial bid. For example; you have bid one no-trump and your partner responds two diamonds as a transfer bid to hearts. Do not pass. If you do pass, I hope you and your partner have driven to the game in separate cars. If not, you’ll need a ride home!

If you wish me to promote an activity in your bridge group, send the information to [email protected] and I will include it in this column.
