In recent years, downtown Huntsville has looked a bit drab during the holidays, and residents haven’t been shy about saying so.
The Downtown Huntsville BIA took that message to heart and this December Main Street Huntsville will be aglow thanks to a lighting initiative by the organization and its downtown merchants.
The BIA issued an RFP this fall and has selected a company for the project, which will cost between $25,000 and $30,000. White lights will adorn or highlight downtown trees, posts, Town Hall, Kent Park and the swing bridge.
“Rachel Hunt is our chair and she loves Christmas,” said Helena Renwick, the BIA’s executive director. “This has been her baby and she’s really passionate about it.”
Downtown Huntsville deserves to sparkle, said Renwick. “The merchants find it important to have a vibrant downtown and they are putting their own hard earned money into it. It’s great for the town.”

Such a great difference to the feel of the downtown with this years lights. Makes me smile every time I drive through town. Thank you
Thank you BIA – that’s the best news! Huntsville is such a special town and deserves it.
Thanks to the BIA for this wonderful initiative. Unrelated but also important, perhaps the stores could stay open later than 5? People complain that the big stores are taking away business from downtown but they are the only place to shop after a working day. Even on Girlfriend’s Getaway weekend the stores close their doors at 5! Downtown Huntsville stores have so much to offer! At least on the aforementioned weekend and for Dec, please consider extending hours – if only until 6. 9 would be better.
I am continually impressed with the Huntsville BIA and its members! They do an amazing job, year after year, with their initiatives! Keep up the great work, folks!!
White lights can be left up for a longer season, and make our town look welcoming in the winter.
Great work BIA,, and something our town needs, maybe it will grow. I also think we should have a tree and a ceremonial lighting after the Santa Claus Parade in the park. Thanks to everyone envolved and all the merchants
It would be nice if we had some colour in the lights instead of the cold white.
I have always thought of the holidays as a colourful, cheerful time.
How about some Christmas music playing?
Just a suggestion.
yay!!! Thank you everyone.
