Downtown Huntsville may get more parking with return of High Street lot

Huntsville’s parking problems could be lessened some next year. During closed session at its October 25 meeting, Huntsville’s General Committee agreed to enter into a lease agreement with the owner of a vacant lot located between High and Princess Streets.

Town of Huntsville’s CAO Denise Corry said that the two-year lease agreement would allow for additional public parking in the downtown core. Once committee’s decision is ratified at the November council meeting, Public Works discussions can proceed on how quickly the lot can be prepared for use. That could happen this winter, but Corry said that spring of 2018 is more likely.

The vacant lot has been used for parking in the past under an agreement with the property’s previous owner that offered tax relief equivalent to $6,200 per year. Details on the new agreement are not yet available.

One would hope that by giving persons without disabilities an alternative parking lot, that additional designated accessible spaces could be demarcated closer to or on Main St.

How is this going to address the issue of handicapped accessibility to the Main St. Shops and events?
