Doppler: A decade of local news excellence in Muskoka

As the traditional newspaper has faded from the Muskoka landscape over the past decade, new outlets have stepped in to fill the void left in the local media landscape.

In the past decade, Muskoka Doppler has become an integral part of the region’s fabric, reaching more than 200,000 readers every month from across the region and from locations worldwide.

“It is hard to believe that Doppler is celebrating its 10th year as a local online news source in Muskoka and East Parry Sound,” says Doppler publisher Hugh Mackenzie.

Established in 2015 by a dedicated group of local journalists, Doppler emerged in response to the diminishing local news landscape in Muskoka, where larger companies had acquired weekly newspapers, leaving a significant void in community reporting. 

Hugh, one of the founding members, reflects on the origins of Doppler, stating, “At the beginning, there was Liz Rice, Matthew Mackenzie, Ben Boucher, and myself,” he says. “All four of us were newshounds, and it all started with a discussion at our dining room table. We believed in the importance of local news and commentary, which was lost with the sale of the weekly newspapers.”

The groundwork for Doppler took about a year, allowing the team to assemble and build the essential advertising support. Hugh notes, “We built the team mostly through our contacts in local media and those who believed local news was important.” 

He emphasizes the distinct challenges and needs of smaller communities, pointing out, “There’s a huge difference between reporting in metro areas like Toronto, Hamilton, and Ottawa compared to smaller towns focused on local issues. Communities like Huntsville, Bracebridge, and Gravenhurst rely on local news and sports coverage that they were no longer receiving.”

Many of the original advertisers who supported Doppler from its inception continue to partner with the company today. The growth in advertising has welcomed a range of local businesses and organizations, enhancing the platform’s reach within the community.

“We’ve proudly advertised with Doppler since their beginning and remain impressed by their professionalism, flexibility, and collaborative approach to creating advertising content that resonates in the community and delivers consistent results,” says a representative from Algonquin Outfitters, a longtime advertiser.

Another founding advertiser, Taylor Carpet One in Huntsville, echoed similar sentiments: “We have been advertising with the Huntsville Doppler since 2015. They have been incredibly easy to work with over the years, and we don’t expect that to change. We enjoy reading, at least the headlines, almost every day. It’s a great way to stay on top of what’s happening locally.”

The impact of Doppler is also reflected in the growing readership. Hugh states, “Visitors to the site have continued to grow year over year, with no signs of slowing down.” The reach of Doppler extends globally, with regular readers from Australia, the Middle East, Turkey, and the Philippines—people with connections to Muskoka. 

This relationship is reciprocal, as readers engage daily by providing comments, writing letters to the editor, and utilizing Doppler’s “Speak Up” section. 

Looking ahead, Doppler has several new and innovative ideas in development, which they plan to introduce in the coming months. “Our goal is to continue finding ways to improve our ability to provide excellent news coverage as we move forward,” says Hugh. “We’re thankful to the community that has made us a household name in Muskoka and east Parry Sound.”
