Deerhurst’s Cottage Country Cup raises $5,000 for Dara’s Fund

‘Tis the season for giving! Just before Christmas, Deerhurst Head Pro, Ryan Barry (pictured above left) and Director of Sales, Luke Nixon-Janssen (2nd from right) presented a cheque for $5,000 to Gord Durnan (second from left) and Daniel Bradbury (right) of Muskoka Community Foundation.

The donation was raised at Deerhurst’s 2nd annual Cottage Country Cup golf event in August to support Dara Howell’s fund benefiting female athletes in Muskoka.

Olympic Gold medalist Dara Howell created Dara’s Fund to provide resources and opportunities for Muskoka’s female athletes who excel in any sport to pursue their dreams of competing at the next level. The funding can be used for coaching fees, team fees, travel expenses, and/or equipment.

Following the inaugural Cottage Country Cup in 2017, Howell said of the Fund, “There’s so many things that cost money. Sport nowadays is so expensive and it all adds up. We come from such an active community that it’s just so important that kids have that experience to push for more. Dara’s Fund can be a stepping stone and it means a lot to my family and I.”

This year’s Cottage Country Cup donation brings the event’s fundraising efforts for Dara’s Fund to just under $10,000.

Plans are already underway for next year’s Cottage Country Cup which will take place August 18-19, 2019.

  1. With so many fundraising events continually proceeding in town, it’s certainly refreshing that Dara’s Fund hasn’t been forgotten. It is, indeed, very important to support our female athletes: One can only hope that they become as successful and modest as Dara.
