Gosh, am I ever glad that the local and District municipalities went ahead, grabbed the moment and “declared a significant weather event”. Here, I thought it looked a lot like Dec – Jan – Feb – Mar look like every year in one form or another.
Maybe it is like declaring a “disaster”, where the declaration itself unlocks funds from somewhere in some government department that are not normally available. I’d suppose a “significant event” would unlock maybe less funds than a “disaster” but either way some funds flow somewhere and that is what government is all about.

Maybe we just got lucky here as what we saw in this area did not look like any kind of problem. Rumor has it that near Barrie it was much worse.

The only problem with all this is that if we declare a non-event to be a significant event too often then after a while people start to simply ignore the noise of the declarations and then when something really significant does arrive it is too late and not enough people took precautions and the entire effort defeats itself. The fable of the Boy Who Cried Wolf comes to mind.

Is there a better way to do this? I know the staff at District are trying to make things better. Maybe there is a better way for them to do this? Something more reasonably in tune with reality?
