Sunshine Sketches with Geordie Sabbagh: Stories of the dreamers and doers

Currie’s Music and Antiques is a treasure trove of vinyl, guitars, collectibles, some pretty neat stories, and a whole lot of mojo.

Geordie Sabbagh brings you a tour of this unique shop in Gravenhurst. It’s the site of an old theatre, and apparently, on some days, depending on the temperature and which way the wind blows, you can still smell the scent of popcorn.

Sunshine Sketches of Muskoka is a short monthly film series celebrating the people, places, and small-town spirit that make this region home.

Created and directed by talented filmmaker Geordie Sabbagh, each episode captures the heart of a community that runs on connection, history, and hope.

Thank you for a happy story in this very upsetting world. We need this kind of magic shared every day.

Don’t we just love to poke through stores such as this. Not that I’ve visited Curries’s. We have a fair box of vinyl of our own and though a guitar would have been my instrument of choice, the radio is all I ever learned to play. After 57+ years of travelling the country and the globe, Tricia and I have a fair puckle of collectibles and stories of our own.

As for Mojo, I think that is either present or not. If you got it, keep it fresh and colorful ‘though you’ll find it sticks to others like life. To have a store that ‘s inspired with it must be a charm.

I can remember a few similar sites. Hern’s on Main Street always had an aura, and what you needed. There were a couple of the old grocery stores in town that always enthralled me. When my Dad or Gramps would take me in, there was a sensation you got from the surroundings. It was enhanced by the people, who didn’t seem that special on the street. I remember an old hardware store in Bancroft that wasn’t short of that special ‘medicine’.

But it is the music these guys produce that takes me back. Listening to it on The Bay is like listening to my old Hitachi transistor. Strapped to the handlebars of my motorcycle. The Spotnicks, the Fireballs, The Ventures, The Tornadoes. All hard driving guitar. Pieces like ‘Johnny Guitar, ‘Wipe Out’, ‘Geronimo”.

And the Canadian contribution by those Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. Who denied being a f$%#ing surf band. But in a later release, confessed that maybe they had been “a f$%#ing surf band after all”.

Best of luck guys. Glad it’s working out. Like your sound. And is it the popcorn you can smell or the melted butter?

    Thanks Geordie

What a great shop. I’ve heard of it…never been there, and I thought it was closed….Well it is definitely on my bucket list now.
