Craft brewery planned for old Dollarama building

The former Dollarama building in Brendale Square has been sold. The deal closed yesterday, September 6, 2017, according to Steve Koncan, who will be leasing the building from the corporation and plans to open a craft brewery at that location.

“I don’t own the property. That’s been purchased by a corporation called Thrive Muskoka and we have an agreement to rent the space from them to put in a craft brewery,” explained Koncan, who said a marketing campaign will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Doppler touched base with Koncan several weeks ago but the sale had not yet gone through. At the time he said the intention was to open a tap room, production facility and a retail store at that location, similar to the Sawdust City Brewing Company in Gravenhurst. At the time, Koncan said that if everything went according to plan the brewery could open sometime next year.

The building, which has been for sale for three years, was purchased from Robert Solomon of London, Ontario.

“I am really pleased to see the property being redeveloped. I think it is going to make a significant difference to the appearance of that plaza that needed considerable work. The difficulty was I don’t live in Huntsville and so redeveloping or attempting to redevelop it from far away wasn’t something that I was particularly interested in and so I’m glad it’s a local and I’m glad that part of the plaza is going to be redeveloped and I wish them the best of luck,” said Solomon, whose father developed the plaza with a partner in 1964.

Solomon said his father and the partner went their separate ways and Sam Peters bought the other half, which is now partly owned by his son Mike Peters of Sam Peters Investments Limited. “Mike Peters owns the parking lot and the rest of the plaza, except for the Chinese restaurant,” explained Solomon. The former Beer Store, and the buildings across from it, are under separate ownership.

That is a great idea for this location.

Mike Peters owns the parking lot. I don’t think he is going to repave the lot for a building he has no investment in.

Great idea! The barrier to overall success here in this plaza has always been the condition of the parking lot which prevented people from visiting various venues. After the Freshco side of this area was repaved, a customer visit difference was definitely made. Weeks ago, repairs were being made to the area in front of Fabricare and hopefully the rest of this lot will be FINALLY totally repaired. Perpetual patching has not worked for years and the potholes, full of water, hid the depth of the depressions and did a lot of damage to vehicles. This plaza is full of customer potential, which to date has not been fully utilized. Kudos to Mr. Koncan for his foresight!
