Community invited to sexual exploitation and human trafficking talk

They are heavy topics, but topics that should be discussed because sexual exploitation and human trafficking aren’t things that just happen in big cities.

The Huntsville High School Parent/School Council, in collaboration with the Trillium Lakeland District School Board and the government of Canada, is bringing subject expert Timea E. Nagy to speak to Grade 9/10 HHS students and the community at large at the Algonquin Theatre at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. This is a free event.

HHS parent council co-chair Sara Berry-Nakamoto said it’s essential for community members to become educated about the issues of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. She said that with social media and an online presence, these risks are something that young people face, and the more educated they are, the better – not just for young people but parents, guardians, and community members.

Berry explained that on the morning of May 15, Grade 9/10 students will be introduced to Digital Online Safety and Exploitation/Online Grooming, as well as what they can do and who they can call for support.

In the evening, topics that will be explored for parents, guardians, and the public are Human/Sex trafficking, Digital Online Safety, Latest Trends/Prevention, Local Resources, and Victim Services.
