Committee votes in favour of adding Kent Park to Town’s alcohol policy

At its July 24 meeting, Huntsville General Committee approved adding Kent Park to its alcohol policy as one of the approved locations to host an event with alcohol.

According to a report provided to committee by Greg Pilling, Manager of Facility Operations, Sales and Customer Service, the alcohol policy was established in 2017. “Since that time, there have been changes to Town facilities that include disposing of the Waterloo Summit Centre for the Environment and a newly designed Kent Park,” noted Pilling. He said last month the BIA wanted to host an event with alcohol in Kent Park, but due to the Municipal Alcohol Policy (MAP), it was not an option “as Kent Park was not on the approved list of locations deemed suitable for alcohol service.”

As per Pilling, committee approved the following changes:

  • Removal of Waterloo Summit Centre for the Environment
  • Addition of Kent Park
  • Addition of any other location deemed appropriate by the Director of Community Services, with the approval of the Special Event Advisory Team (SEAT) and the Parks Manager.

In terms of risk management, Philling stated in his report that: “Due to Kent Park being a small area located on a busy intersection in Downtown Huntsville, staff will need to ensure public safety, and any recommendations from the Special Event Advisory Team, have been properly addressed when reviewing and approving applications to sell and consume alcohol at this location.”

    Pretty tough comments people.

Right there at a busy intersection. Could that be a problem? Sure are lots of things to fall off though. The whole place is pretty tough though. Should take the wear and tear. And what else is this place to be used for?

And maybe council could run the aid station on these special occasions.

Just what we need, drunks wondering into traffic on main street.
It will be the drivers fault, it always is!
Sweltering moonscape.. For a lack of a better description!

The Kent “Park” eyesore is an example of a design under the influence of alcohol.
That embarrassing mistake has still not been corrected.
$400K!! to turn a green, inviting park into a sweltering moonscape.
