There is a new gallery space currently showcasing contemporary art by three young emerging artists, Molly Lalonde, Arnwyn Westgarth and Blake Quinlan. The show is curated by Sam Sullivan, who, along with her husband Chris, owns and operates Red Pine Art Supply.
They have a separate designated exhibition space called COLLABORATE, which you enter through the main retail door at 1- 6 West St N in Huntsville. Most of the work is installed along an exposed brick wall with the largest piece displayed on a traditional wooden easel.
The work is varied and yet connected in a way that provides a glimpse into the hearts and minds of a new generation of artists. The first two paintings by Molly Lalonde are both of similar palettes and seem to convey some of the extreme conditions of today’s existence – from an alienated geometric figure to what could be seen in the next painting as a longing for the safety and softness of a childhood toy.
Anwyn Westgarth’s deft rendering of anime-inspired figures seems at once to convey a hesitant superhero and an insightful critique of the narcissistic pop culture of consumerism and designer labels.
Blake Ouinlan’s very current work pushes the boundaries of a 2D painting by adding sewn material that opens and closes over a portion of the painting. Quinlan’s petit painting of an anatomical heart is very sensitively painted exposing a vulnerability that is in stark contrast to the well-known vivid heart depictions of historical, now commercial artist, Frida Kahlo.
This is just the beginning for these three motivated artists and their mentor Sam Sullivan. The exhibition runs until Labour Day weekend.
