Cody Maw knows that lots of people have a thing about man buns. It doesn’t matter if you love ‘em or hate ‘em – he makes no apologies about his look. But he’s willing to change it for a cause.
Cody’s cousin Ben Sturgeon, 28, has stage four sarcoma – he can no longer work and the costs of travel for treatments and needed medication is taking its toll on his family. So Cody decided to help, and to do it in a way that would have double the impact.
“I know that people donate hair (for people undergoing cancer treatments), so I thought why not double up on it,” he says. He’s raising money for his cousin’s family by offering to ‘murder his man bun’ if enough money is donated. If the fund gets high enough, he’ll shave off his beard, too – he hasn’t been clean-shaven in more than a decade.
“Sooner or later I was going to cut my hair – I haven’t had it cut since August 2014.” His brother is in the military so Cody’s promised him a military cut, but he’ll even consider shaving it right off if enough donations come in.
Cody put a call out on his Facebook page that raised a few hundred dollars, bringing the GoFundMe page Ben’s brother set up to over $2000. He’s aiming for a total of $3300 by the end of September before the scissors come out.
“So all you haters of: disheveled people, man buns, hipsters in general, long hair on men, the movie castaway, ponytails, The Avett Brothers, clogged shower drains, people who are less bald than you, hobos, surfer wannabes, misappropriation of Japanese culture, cavemen, me,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “This is your chance to band together, help out someone who could really use it and destroy a man bun, all in one fell swoop!”
