UPDATE February 3, 2017: Due to unfavourable weather conditions, Cann Lake will not be opening this year. See details here.
Town staff have been working to get the Cann Lake skating rink – which was closed last winter due to unfavourable weather conditions – ready for some family winter fun. Now they just need Mother Nature to co-operate with some colder temperatures.
The rink area had been cleared of snow earlier in the month and then warmer temperatures and rain arrived. Town staff were out again yesterday clearing the rink in hope that the sub-zero temperatures in the forecast for this weekend might firm up the ice surface enough to make it suitable and safe for skating.
“I can’t even tell you how excited my staff are when they get to go and make the rink,” said Colleen MacDonald, Manager of Parks and Cemeteries. “They just want to get out there.”
The rink surface was slushy yesterday and there are still soft spots particularly at the shoreline access point, said MacDonald. But if the forecast holds true, the rink could be open for public skating as early as next week.
Once it’s open, the rink will be free to use during posted hours – watch the Town’s website for details – but as a natural ice surface, ongoing availability depends on weather conditions. For safety, respect the posted signs at the site.
Cann Lake is at the north-east corner of Brunel Road and Forbes Hill Drive. Parking is available across from the rink on Forbes Hill Drive at Conroy Park.
