Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships cancelled due to poor conditions

Mother Nature just wouldn’t cooperate. With the late arrival of cold temperatures this winter, followed by recent rain, organizers of the Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships (CNPHC) announced today that they are cancelling this year’s tournament, slated for February 5-7 at Deerhurst Resort.

“Safety is a paramount concern,” said CNPHC co-founder and Executive Director Neil Lumsden. “Twenty-three rinks were in place but now we are left with a shadow of what was in place but more importantly slush and thin ice is what’s left behind. That’s what makes the site unsafe for people and equipment.”

More than 175 teams had registered for the sold-out tournament, which also included a Friday-night party and Saturday banquet. Read Doppler’s earlier story on the event’s volunteers here.
