“Save South Muskoka Hospital” Committee, a collective community voice, strongly advocates in support of our doctors’ compelling proposal titled “Care Close to Home“. Their model offers a reasonable alternative to the current Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) model which falls significantly below the healthcare needs of South Muskoka.
The joint consultations with the doctors’ group, indicates that progress has commenced with MAHC’s more conciliatory position. Their proposal, however, still remains considerably below a full acute care facility in Bracebridge as promised. The doctors are cautiously optimistic that greater movement from MAHC towards the physicians’ ultimate model “Care Close to Home,” may be attained. It is crucial that MAHC understands the unwavering support of our citizens for the doctors’ vision for two equal acute care hospitals.
At this critical time, it’s imperative that all citizens continue with expressions of protest to our political leaders. Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare must recognize that the height of our opposition has yet to be attained should the physicians’ model fail to be met.
We are encouraging all citizens to continue sending their letters of objection to our political leaders at provincial, district, and municipal levels. We are further asking the community to display SSMH window and lawn signs, plus ensure their signatures are on SSMH petitions. We ask citizens, to also air their discontent direct to MAHC by withholding foundation donations until a fair compromise is achieved.

We are grateful for all support, whether volunteering, obtaining lawn and yard signs, donating to our cause, or signing our petitions.
Together, let us ensure that quality healthcare remains accessible to all residents of South Muskoka.
We ask Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare… “Keep The Promise… Two Equal Acute Care Hospitals!

Given the costs involved in constructing (as noted above in article) ” two equal acute care hospitals” one should look at Toronto, where there are a multitude of hospitals, each of which specializes in particular areas of medical care.
Toronto’s height is roughly the same as the distance between Huntsville and Bracebridge..and its width maybe 1.5 times that.
Patients are routinely transferred from one site to another. Patients are also transferred from Huntsville and Bracebridge to Toronto trauma / emergency hospitals. This is standard procedure, necessitated by the need to reduce duplication of services and resultant associated capital or operating costs in order to keep our health system viable without doubling or tripling the supporting tax base.
So, people of Muskoka, it is time to bite the bullet and quit this ‘my site must be equal to your site’ way of thinking. If you are in one hospital, and need the services of another, you will be transported there by the patient transfer service. Whether you are in BB or HV, you may get sent to HV or BB, or even Orillia or Barrie, or Toronto.. a van is way cheaper in the long run..
Think about the big picture.
