The mention of ice cream will bring a smile to just about any child’s face, but one Port Sydney boy has even more reason to smile after Belly Ice Cream Company’s grand opening on Saturday, July 2.
Belly owner Shelley Westgarth was planning to give free ice cream away to celebrate the company’s new location on West Street, but then she decided a fundraiser was a better idea. “I thought if we’re going to give away all that ice cream, we should benefit somebody. I saw all of the Facebook posts from Nate’s mom on Facebook and I thought, ‘she must be just exhausted.’ I wanted to see it go to somebody local where it could make a difference.”
Nate is Nate Perry, a young boy who is currently in St. Louis for surgery and therapy to help him walk. (Read Nate’s story on Doppler here.)
The fundraiser, which included ice cream for a donation, a dunk tank, a barbecue courtesy of Deerhurst Resort, samples of Beat the Wheat’s gluten-free waffle cones, and an ice cream eating contest, raised $1050 for Nate.
