At Community Living Huntsville, Tracy Gerrow found meaningful work with human connection.
“I love this job,” she says. “It’s not always easy. But getting to know people and trying to figure out how to make people happy every day? That’s what I like doing.”
Gerrow had previously worked as a personal support worker in long-term care. In 2022, she decided it was time for a career change, and she chose developmental services. Now, as a Direct Support Professional with Community Living Huntsville’s Supported Group Living team, she empowers adults with developmental disabilities to live the lives they choose, both at home and in their community.
“I like to help people, to empower them and advocate alongside them so they can express themselves and their voices can be heard,” says Gerrow.
She is motivated by the connections she makes with the people she supports and the recognition that they appreciate her and her work. She wants people to have a good quality of life and she values the quality one-on-one time she spends with people she supports.
She says it’s meaningful, enjoyable, and fulfilling work.
“It’s fun. It’s exciting. Not every day is the same,” says Gerrow. “Plus, management is great, the people I work with are great, and the people I support are great. To me, it’s just a release to come to work.”
