It appears that District recruitment efforts are paying off at local Long Term Care (LTC) homes.
During the recent Health Services Committee meeting, Norm Barrette, the District Commissioner of Health Services, provided an update on staffing and recruitment efforts at Muskoka’s long-term care homes.

Barrette shared encouraging statistics, revealing improvements in staffing levels. In previous years, the District faced significant staffing shortages, leading to increased dependence on temporary staffing agencies and rising costs. However, recent recruitment initiatives have successfully filled many of these positions.
At the Pines in Bracebridge, Muskoka’s largest long-term care facility, unfilled shifts have now reached record low levels. All full-time positions are filled, and most part-time roles have also been filled.
As a result, the District’s reliance on temporary staffing agencies is expected to continue decreasing, as noted by Barrette.
At Fairvern LTC, agency hours are also reported to be well below the low range as of February 2025, showing a 7% decrease from January to February.
