Since 1955, the Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary has been raising much-needed funds for hospital equipment through a wide variety of events and fundraisers. One of those – the annual Autumn House Tour – is fast approaching.
The tours have been running since 1992 – back then they were Christmas tours but the weather was unreliable – and now alternate between Huntsville and Bracebridge each fall. They’ve offered a glimpse into sometimes grand and sometimes modest but always beautiful local homes, opened to the community by gracious hosts in support of Muskoka’s hospitals.
This year, on Saturday, September 24, you can tour seven lovely Huntsville homes followed by a light, elegant lunch at Faith Baptist Church. (UPDATE: As of September 22, the lunch is sold out but tickets are still available for the tour for $20.) The homes range from new to mid-century modern to the haven of a pair of local artisans.
“All of the homes are unique in their own way,” says the Auxiliary’s Arvina Bennett. “People can tour them in any order they wish and then join us for an elegant lunch afterward.”
One of the homes is that of Dr. Malcolm and Louise Wilson – a renovated mid-century modern built in 1956 that rests on two acres of natural forest in the heart of Huntsville. In the winter they enjoy a view of Fairy Lake, in the summer it’s lush with greenery, and in the fall the stand of largely maples is ablaze in colour.
“It’s nice to live in town in the woods and be able to walk everywhere,” says Louise. “My husband works at the hospital and we have lived in the community for 28 years. One way that we can contribute is by opening our house for this tour. If I can help this way, why wouldn’t I?”
The funds raised at this year’s tour are earmarked for vital signs monitors at Huntsville Hospital.
(NOTE: As of September 22, the lunch is sold out but tickets are available for the tour only for $20 at the hospital gift shop or after 9:30 a.m. on September 24 at Faith Baptist.) Tickets are available for $30 each at the Algonquin Theatre box office, online at algonquintheatre.ca, at the Huntsville Hospital Gift Shop or by calling 705-635-3355. No children under 14 are permitted and organizers are asking anyone interested in the tour to please purchase tickets before September 17 so that they can plan for the lunch.
