In his first UFC win, local MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter Kyle ‘The Monster’ Nelson left no doubts about his power. On September 21, the featherweight faced Marco Polo Reyes in Mexico City and was awarded the win by TKO (technical knockout) just 1:36 into the first round.
“Combat sports have always been my dream,” said Nelson, who began training in mixed martial arts fourteen years ago. He has been competing professionally for the last eight and has a professional win-loss record of 13-3.
He was born and raised in Huntsville, and currently travels to the House of Champions in Stoney Creek, Ontario three to four times a week for training.
Nelson’s coach, Alin Halmagean, said, “The many years of hard work and dedication for the sport materialize in a great victory for Kyle.”

Nelson is working on scheduling another UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fight before the end of the year, en route to his goal: UFC Champion. To get there, he’ll have to keep winning against higher-ranked opponents to earn the opportunity to face the current champion. “There is no real way to qualify for the UFC,” said Nelson. “You just have to fight and prove you’re one of the best fighters in the world.”
There is no off-season in the UFC, so Nelson trains year-round as he awaits future bouts. Among the support he receives in his career is the expertise of The SportLab in Huntsville, helping him to prepare and recover from any injuries sustained during training and in competition.
There will be a victory party to celebrate Nelson’s UFC win tonight, October 5, at 7 p.m. at Moose Delaney’s.
