As part of the decommissioning of Huntsville’s Mountview wastewater treatment plant, the District of Muskoka has been planning for relocation of the outfall pipe from the Golden Pheasant wastewater treatment plant.
Fred Jahn, District commissioner of engineering and public works, provided a brief update on the project to the District engineering and public works committee on January 19.
“That project is progressing quite well,” said Jahn. “At this time we have expanded the process at Golden Pheasant and are already producing a higher quality effluent from that plant than we had before.”
The Mountview plant will be replaced by a new sewage pumping station, and the plans to build and relocate the new outfall, which will move from the mouth of the Muskoka River near Alice Island to a location further east along the north shore of Fairy Lake, are in place.
The District’s next step is to file an addendum to the environmental assessment (EA) originally filed in 2014 to make note of the new outfall location. The proposed outfall location was part of a public consultation process in 2018 and has already received committee approval.
The new location will allow for gravity outfall, which has several benefits, noted Jahn, including “energy savings, better environmental outcomes, significant capital cost savings by not having to upgrade infrastructure that’s underground now.”
The EA addendum is expected to be released within the next couple of weeks and will be available for public comment for 30 days.
Jahn said the entire project is expected to be completed within the next two years.
