Alice Mary MacKay (nee Yantha)

It is with sadness that the family of Alice Mackay announces her passing on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Roger’s Cove Retirement, Huntsville. May she rest in peace, and her spirit be reunited with her husband and best friend, James Mackay.

Born on August 15, 1933, Alice was in her 91st year. She was born in Whitney, Ontario, to Frank and Stella Yantha, the second oldest of five sisters and two brothers. She was predeceased by her parents and her sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys and Carl Dubreuil, Rita and Dennis Groomes, Vivian and Trevor Fleetham, and Marion Lynch.  Left to mourn her passing are brothers Patrick (Jane) and Francis, known to many as Frankie. She will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and friends for her warm smile and freshly baked cookies.

Alice spent her youth in Whitney and worked at resorts in Algonquin Park before moving to Huntsville, where she began working in Wardell’s store office. From there, she moved on to a long and fulfilling career of over 20 years in the office of the Department of Highways. She retired early from MTO and devoted the next phase of her working career to caring for her nephews, Paul and Bryan.  When her husband James retired from MTO, he and Alice enjoyed many years of travelling together and spending time at their cottage. Those years together were highlighted by canoeing and fishing, both summer and winter.

When they were not off together on one of their journeys, Alice was busy at home with her garden, knitting, volunteer work at Fairvern, or helping with the CWL, all of which brought her much joy.

It is with sadness that her family says goodbye to a fine lady, but know that she has left an indelible memory for us to cherish.

There will be a funeral mass for Alice at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 12 Centre Street North in Huntsville, on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 2:00 pm, followed by visitation and refreshments in the church hall. All are welcome to share memories of Alice at that time.

Donations in memory of Alice may be made to a charity of your choice.  www.mitchellfuneralhome.ca.
