It was a perfect day for paddling.
All told, 66 teams or individuals took part in this year’s Algonquin Outfitters Big East River X.
The day started early with race organizers Rob Horton and Mike Varieur getting the crowd stoked.

Everyone left from Huntsville’s Town dock paddling either solo or in tandem, a canoe, kayak, or a stand up paddle board (SUP).
They’re off!
The ardent paddles chose the marathon 40km route that took them up the Muskoka River, through Hunters Bay, through the Vernon Narrows, past Hutcheson Beach and up the Big East River as far as the Tulip Motor Inn. Once they reached that point they turned around to enjoy the down-stream paddle back.
The shorter 9km course took paddlers in the same direction through the Muskoka River but once they reached Lake Vernon they circled around Gallaugher Island Island and came back.
- Roy Vallinga and Ron Marsh, calling themselves Tubeerdz (two beards), set out.
- Luna joins 15-year old Lake Vernon cottager Isaac Turkstra on his warm up. Issac finished with an impressive time of 1:24:01.
- Nicole Doyon heads out on her 40km paddle all smiles.
The top finisher in the 40km marathon event was Brian Heath, a solo paddler, with a time of 3:35:59.4. The top finisher in the 9km event was Colin Ellis with a time of 59:25.1.
