Algonquin Grace residential hospice closed due to COVID outbreak

Hospice Huntsville’s Algonquin Grace residential hospice will be closed until Dec. 20 due to a COVID outbreak.

The outbreak was declared earlier this month following a single confirmed case of COVID-19.

As of December 9, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported three cases associated with the outbreak.

“We will be closed to admissions until all contact tracing and a public health investigation has been completed,” the organization said in an emailed statement. “Effective Thursday December 9th, the hospice residence is empty and will remain closed until December 20th, 2021. We continue to adhere to stringent infection control measures, active screening of all persons entering our facility and diligent hygiene measures to ensure the ongoing safety of all the staff, volunteers, residents, and community members.”

Only essential staff are currently working on site.

Huntsville has seen a surge in cases in recent weeks. As of Dec. 9, there were 18 active cases in the municipality including one in hospital. There have been 14 cases reported in Huntsville since the beginning of December; there were 77 Huntsville-area cases in November.
