The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has joined #GivingTuesdayCA, an initiative that will harness the collective power of charities, families, businesses and individuals coast to coast to celebrate giving back. Coinciding with the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesdayCA will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, and give back in better and smarter ways to the charities and causes they support. Taking place on December 1, 2015, #GivingTuesdayCA will use the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and CyberMonday have become synonymous with holiday shopping.

“The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is proud to be a #GivingTuesdayCA partner. As a cause-driven charity, we welcome the important reminder that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” said Vice President of Philanthropy and Brand Management at the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, Jeanette Heywood. “When you give to #MyY, you change lives. Our community should feel confident that every dollar donated to the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka on #GivingTuesdayCA, and throughout the year, goes directly to help children and families participate in YMCA memberships and programs, regardless of their financial circumstances.”

The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has a financial goal of raising $7,000 on #GivingTuesdayCA, to ensure families who have a financial need are able to access YMCA programs and services in our communities. The Y is asking citizens to make a pledge; whether it’s pledging to volunteer an hour a week, to make a financial donation, or to encourage local government, institutions and organizations to partner in the #GivingTuesdayCA movement. The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka wants to promote the creativity of the community to give back.

“Whether it’s raising awareness, volunteering or fundraising, Giving Tuesday was created to inspire everyone to get involved and rally around the causes that are meaningful to them,” said Heywood. “Just as Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season, Giving Tuesday is the opening day of the giving season. It’s a global movement to encourage giving back at every level during the holiday season and beyond.”

On December 1 and throughout the holiday season, Canadians are invited to take part in campaigns, activities and events organized by #GivingTuesdayCA partners from coast to coast.

The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka is encouraging donors to help families in the area access YMCA program and services by visiting www.GiveToTheY.ca to donate.
