The submissions are in and the Mayor and the Town’s volunteer curator have made their choices for the second annual Mayor’s Art Contest. Now it’s your turn to help select the People’s Choice Award winner, a new award in the contest this year.
Fifty-four Huntsville-area students submitted artwork to the contest through their schools. All of them are now hanging in Partners Hall for public viewing and voting.
“There are a lot of great submissions this year,” said Mayor Scott Aitchison. Of the piece he chose for the Mayor’s Choice Award, he added, “I built a rink this year on my lakefront – it was a lot of work and it reminded me of how much fun it was to have my extended family out there on Family Day skating and playing hockey. I thought it was really well done with lots of different mediums – paint and pastels and construction paper. I thought it was really quite thoughtful and unique.”
Mayor Scott Aitchison liked the use of mixed media in the piece he chose for the Mayor’s Choice Award (top left); a wide range of styles and subjects were depicted in the fifty-four pieces submitted
“It’s awesome to see the young talent we have,” said Kelly Holinshead, the volunteer curator for the contest. She chose a depiction of Huntsville’s swing bridge for the Curator’s Award. “I thought it was very brave of that child to try to depict an actual thing in our town – it was really ambitious and the composition is really clever, too, with the people off to one side and the car (on the other). It follows the rule of thirds.”
Holinshead added that making the choice was hard, “but I only get one ribbon and I can only put it on one piece.”
Voting is open from April 19 until May 19 when Partners Hall is open. Award winners and honourable mentions will be recognized at the Council meeting on May 24.
