The Huntsville Hawks Tykes hosted the annual Jack Bionda Shootout from June 16 to 17 with six teams competing at the Canada Summit Centre, including the Tyke 1 (2010 birth year) and Tyke 2 (2011 birth year) teams.

The Hawks Tyke 1 team had great success over the weekend after having only nine regular season games to learn to work together as a team.

“Experienced players continue to develop while leading the newer lacrosse players. Our team improves every time we step on the floor,” said Tykes 1 Coach Jeff Higgs.

Higgs gave the team these words of encouragement: “Have trust in your teammates and play the way we practice. Take each game one shirt at a time, one period at a time.” The team brought that conviction to the tournament to earn them the title of champions!

In their first game of the tournament, the Tykes 1 team played against the Barrie Bombers 2 with a whopping win of 15 to 1. Their second win of the day was against the Burlington Chiefs 2, with a score of 13 to 4.

The Hawks Tyke 2 team was up against some tough competition and did not fare as well.

With their two Saturday wins, the Tyke 1 team moved on to Sunday’s games. A 12 to 3 win against the Whitby Warriors 3 earned them a place in the finals where they would meet the Burlington Chiefs 2 for the second time. The Hawks won 9 to 3 for a clean sweep of the tournament and the title.

The Huntsville Hawks Tyke 1 team is now preparing for the 13th annual Dan Greer Memorial Tournament hosted by the Clarington Minor Lacrosse Association from July 13 to 15 in Bowmanville.
