There are few things more devastating than losing everything you own in a fire. It’s an overwhelming experience that can leave a person feeling shocked, displaced, and unsure where to begin. In a matter of minutes, a home filled with memories, personal belongings, and the comforts of daily life can be reduced to ashes. That is what happened to the residents of two Huntsville homes that became engulfed in a fire in the early hours of June 5. Fortunately, they escaped with their lives, but some weren’t even wearing shoes.
To help the victims, friends and family have organized fundraisers and are appealing to the community for any assistance they can provide.
For the Westgarth Family, organized by Leah Rheeder
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the Westgarth family after a devastating fire destroyed their Huntsville home on June 5.
According to the fundraiser, Shelley Westgarth’s daughter, Anwyn, woke up to smoke in her room at approximately 5 a.m. and alerted the family before the fire alarms sounded. The family escaped safely, but left behind nearly all of their belongings.
The home suffered extensive damage and has since collapsed internally. The family has been told the house will need to be demolished and rebuilt, leaving them displaced for an estimated year.
In addition to the loss of their home and possessions, Shelley’s husband, James, lost his work truck and plumbing tools in the fire. As a self-employed plumber, the loss has also impacted his ability to work.
Westgarth is the owner of Belly Ice Cream, a popular local business. The fundraiser notes that she is focused on helping her family recover before considering when the business may reopen.
Funds raised will help cover immediate expenses, including temporary housing, clothing, food, transportation, and other essential needs while the family awaits insurance support.
Organizers say the fundraiser is intended to help the family begin rebuilding after an unimaginable loss and have thanked the community for its ongoing support.

Georgette Kilpatrick has organized a GoFundMe for her sister and her family
A fundraising campaign has been launched to support a Huntsville family after a devastating house fire destroyed their home and most of their belongings.
According to the fundraiser, the family escaped the blaze safely, along with their two dogs. However, they lost nearly everything in the fire, including clothing, furniture, personal belongings, cherished keepsakes, and other everyday necessities.
Organizers say the family now faces the difficult task of rebuilding their lives and will require assistance with immediate expenses such as temporary housing, food, clothing, toiletries, pet supplies, and other essential needs.
The fundraiser notes that while the road to recovery will be challenging, support from family, friends, and the community will help the family begin moving forward after the tragedy.
Donations and shares of the campaign are being encouraged to help ease the financial burden as the family starts over following the fire.
