Town of Huntsville to host 2019 Ontario 55+ Winter Games

Dignitaries gathered on June 19 to celebrate the announcement that Huntsville will play host to the 2019 Ontario 55+ Winter Games, set for February 2019. It is the only major provincial winter sporting event in Ontario for the 55+ age demographic. Huntsville last hosted these games in 2013.

Once again Huntsville is going to be hosting people from all over our province in a sporting event. This is an immensely popular location for these events and we are really good at hosting these things. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with the province of Ontario and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport to bring the games to Huntsville.Mayor Scott Aitchison

Next steps, according to Mayor Aitchison, are the formation of an organizing committee and the hiring of a general manager. “We will now start the process of building an organizing committee,” Aitchison told the crowd. “We will be looking for a chair and a general manager to run these games. That work will begin now. We are excited to say that the ball is officially rolling.”

The Province is investing $235,000 for the 2019 Ontario 55+ Games. The event is expected to bring more than 1,000 participants to the area with an anticipated economic impact of $2 million.
