Town developing road-naming policy

The Town of Huntsville will soon have a new road-naming policy and inventory list to guide developers of new subdivisions, as well as the renaming of existing roads as required.

Many municipalities have road naming policies and road name inventory lists for developers to select from, noted Margaret Stead, manager of corporate information for the Town of Huntsville. She presented a report to Huntsville General Committee on Sept. 29 outlining the proposed policy.

The policy would help ensure that road names are not duplicated and sound different enough to avoid confusion during 911 dispatching. Road names need to conform to Bell Canada 911 system standards.

A road name inventory list can also serve to acknowledge or commemorate local people, places or things, she said.

“The concept of a road name inventory list will allow for a more streamlined process when reviewing
and selecting new road names for new development areas,” Stead wrote in her report.

If a developer wants to use a name not on the inventory list, it can be submitted for consideration by council.

The draft road-naming bylaw includes four categories for names: geographical reference, which would require an application and would follow the province’s geographic naming principles; past mayors and reeves; fire chiefs or long-service achievement; and casualties of war. Other name groups could be added or removed as the council of the day sees fit.

The policy applies to all roadways within the Town of Huntsville that provide access to two or more properties including town roads and private roads.
