Committee approves parking bylaw amendment to include EV stations

Huntsville Bylaw Enforcement Officer Corey Crewson appeared before Huntsville’s General Committee on April 24 to ask for permission to amend the Town’s parking bylaw to include electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

The move comes in anticipation of charging stations for six vehicles coming to the High Street parking lot.

The bylaw will include, under offences, the parking of a non-EV vehicle in an EV charging station and parking an EV vehicle in a charging station that isn’t connected to the charger.

Crewson said EVs would also be subject to the 3-hour parking limit, as per the parking bylaw.

Councillor Monty Clouthier wanted to know whether the offending vehicles would be towed. Crewson said a $125 fine would be issued first. “It’s not very common that we would tow a vehicle out. We do issue tickets first and foremost, and there’s $125, so I hope that deters anyone from parking there.”

Clouthier asked what the fine would be for parking in a fire access lane. Crewson said it depends on the location but for example, parking in the fire access route on Dara Howell Way carries a $75 fine.

“I just want to know why we’re charging $125 for an EV spot but that nobody’s gonna die from but when someone’s fire truck can’t get down the road we’re charging $75,” he said.

Councillor Helena Renwick questioned whether that should be discussed since committee members were looking about the parking bylaw. Huntsville Mayor Nancy Alcock seemed to indicate that was not the tight time. Her remarks were inaudible.

All recommendations from the committee must be ratified by council.
