TLDSB students outperform provincial averages in latest EQAO results

The Education Quality and Assessment Office (EQAO) has released its latest provincial assessment results for the 2024–2025 school year, showing strong gains for students in the Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB), particularly at the elementary level.

TLDSB students in Grades 3, 6, 9 and 10 were assessed in reading, writing and mathematics, and in nearly all categories, the board exceeded provincial averages while also posting noticeable improvements over the past three years.

“We are extremely proud of all the hard work at all levels of the system,” said TLDSB Director of Education Wes Hahn. “These outstanding EQAO results reflect the dedication and commitment of our students, and the expertise and tireless efforts of our teaching and support staff. We are clearly seeing that the strategies used in TLDSB are working and look forward to continuing to make gains.”

At the Grade 3 level, 72 per cent of TLDSB students met the provincial standard in mathematics, marking a 16-percentage-point improvement over the past three years. The board also reported 80 per cent of students meeting the standard in reading (+10 per cent) and 69 per cent in writing (+12 per cent).

By comparison, the provincial averages are 64 per cent in math, 74 per cent in reading and 65 per cent in writing.

At the Grade 6 level, 55 per cent of TLDSB students met the standard in mathematics, up 15 percentage points over three years. Reading results climbed to 89 per cent (+11 per cent), while 87 per cent met the provincial benchmark in writing (+12 per cent).

Provincially, 51 per cent of students met the standard in Grade 6 math, 86 per cent in reading and 85 per cent in writing.

At the secondary level, 53 per cent of TLDSB students met the provincial standard in Grade 9 mathematics, an eight-percentage-point increase from previous years, although still below the provincial average of 58 per cent.

Meanwhile, 83 per cent of first-time eligible students were successful on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, a five-point increase. The provincial average for first-time success sits at 85 per cent.

Results from the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board showed more mixed outcomes.

At the Grade 3 level, 49 per cent of students met the provincial standard in mathematics, down three percentage points over the past three years. Reading results stood at 65 per cent (down one point), while 55 per cent met the writing benchmark (down seven points).

For Grade 6 students, 37 per cent met the provincial standard in math, a four-point decline. Reading results improved slightly to 82 per cent, while writing held steady at 81 per cent.

At the secondary level, 44 per cent of students met the provincial standard in Grade 9 mathematics, reflecting a six-point increase. Literacy test results showed 83 per cent of first-time eligible students were successful, up one percentage point.

EQAO assessments are used across Ontario to measure student achievement in key curriculum areas and to help guide instructional planning at the classroom, board and provincial levels.
