Third COVID death reported in Huntsville

This post was update Nov. 17 to include the age and gender of the person who died.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting one new COVID-19 death in Huntsville today, a man aged 80-plus.

It’s the third death in Huntsville since the pandemic began.

COVID-19 cases have been on the rise in Muskoka this month, with a total of 36 since Nov. 1: 19 in Huntsville, 12 in Bracebridge, two in Lake of Bays, two in Gravenhurst, and one in Georgian Bay. Twenty-five are currently active: 11 in Huntsville, 11 in Bracebridge, two in Gravenhurst, and one in Georgian Bay. Two people are in hospital.

Four cases (as of Nov. 16) have been attributed to an outbreak at VK Greer PS in Port Sydney. An earlier outbreak at Monck PS in Bracebridge involving three cases was declared over on Nov. 9.

Vaccinations have also been increasing, though the rate locally has slowed significantly in recent weeks. As of today, 51,212 (85.2 per cent) of residents aged 12 and older have received a first dose, while 49,325 (82.0 per cent) have received a second.
