Third annual Greystone Gravel Grinder returns May 3 in support of local mountain bike trails

The Huntsville Mountain Bike Association is hosting the third annual Greystone Gravel Grinder on Saturday, May 3rd, out of the Perry Township Office just north of Huntsville.

This is a ‘ride,’ not a race, meaning everyone is welcome to ride it at their own pace and on a variety of bikes (mountain bike, e-bike, gravel bike). They have 20km, 50km, 80km, and, new this year, a 100km option for routes. There is formal course marking, a mid-station with snacks, water, and washrooms. They’ll also have prizes and swag for entrants. There is a combination of paved road, gravel road, double track (think ATV trail), and everything in between!

The ride is used as one of the bike club’s major revenue sources for the season. Any funds raised go back into the building, maintenance, and advocacy of our local mountain bike trail networks. They currently have three sanctioned venues. Hidden Valley, located at the main parking lot of the ski hill, is insured through the Town of Huntsville and is open to the public from May 1 – October 31st annually. Deerhurst Resort trails and Lances Loops (just before the locks on Brunel Road) are member-only and offer a great variety of trails (annual bike club memberships are available through the website).

The past gravel rides have raised over $10,000 each. The club has previously invested in professional trail building (a beginner/youth-focused flow trail at Hidden Valley)and purchased an enclosed trailer for the club’s tools and equipment last year. This year, the funds raised will go towards another beginner flow trail suitable for riders of all skill levels.

The club offers weekly group social rides on Tuesdays all summer and a weekly race on Thursdays. Memberships can be found on their website HERE
