Suzuki music students ready to serve up delicious Indian fare

Students from the Huntsville Suzuki School of Music are preparing for their delicious annual fundraiser – a traditional East Indian dinner.

Students and parent volunteers cook the meal under the watchful eye of the school’s director, Philip Kashap, using his family’s Punjabi recipes. “It’s the same style you’ll find in most East Indian restaurants,” explained Kashap, whose father hails from northwest India and from whom he learned the recipes. “I make sure everything is prepared correctly.” It takes several days to prepare all of the dishes.

The menu includes masoor dal, a cabbage bhaji, potato-chickpea curry, raita, chicken curry, pork vindaloo, naan, assorted chutneys, ice cream and masala chai. Diners can also make a donation to take home leftovers – if there are any left. The Huntsville Legion will be providing a cash bar including soft drinks, beer and wine.

The fundraiser is wildly popular, usually selling out all 286 seats in advance of the dinner. Guests have even gotten into the theme of the evening by dressing in a kurta, sari, or salwar kameez to look the part.

New this year is online pre-bidding on the evening’s silent auction items. A variety of goods and services donated by local businesses are up for grabs with items valued from $20 up to $500. See them here until the day before the dinner; final bidding will be completed at the dinner.

Many of the school’s 30 students will perform that evening. “There will be many different styles of music. It’s worth the price of admission just to see them play.”

Funds raised offset the costs of renting space in the Huntsville Train Station from the Town of Huntsville.

The dinner is Saturday, March 5, at 6:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion. Tickets for adults are $25 until February 27 and then $30; for children 12 or younger are $10; and for children 6 or younger are free. Purchase a table of 8 or find a place to sit with others and make some new friends!

Tickets are available from Soul Sistas and Treasures & Trophies, or online at www.huntsvillesuzuki.org.
