St. Mary’s women knit bears for smiles

Every Friday a group of women gather at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntsville to make life a little easier for those in need.

The latest project for the Catholic Women’s League of Huntsville involves knitting bears for Operation Smile, a program that helps children with cleft lips and cleft palates.

“We were trying to think of something we could give them instead of just giving a cheque,” said Diana Snowden, president of the league. “Anyone can come and join us, you don’t need to be a member. We meet from 10 a.m. to noon. It’s a wonderful group of ladies.”

“Everybody has a job to do,” added Janice Baardolf, a member of the group. “Some people can’t knit, so some people roll out the wool, or they can sew up the bears, or stuff the bears.”

Along with their donation, the league will also be giving a bear to every child. An operation costs $240 and the ladies sell bears for $10 each.

“Every child we sponsor will get a bear,” said Snowden. “Their faces are forever changed.”

The group started making the bears in March and will continue to make them for the remainder of the year.

If you would like to donate wool, batting, needles or yarn to the group or donate to Operation Smile contact Snowden at 705-784-0332.

The Catholic Women’s League Annual Conference is taking place this weekend, April 29-30, at St. Mary’s and the group will have the bears on display for purchase.
