Spring road clean up delayed by late-to-arrive spring weather

The street sweepers are coming, just a little later than usual this year.

Thanks to a lingering winter and snow banks that didn’t melt completely away until last week, the Town and District’s public works crews couldn’t begin cleaning up the residual sand and gravel as early as they have in the past.

The Town’s Director of Operations and Protective Services, Steve Hernen, told Huntsville’s General Committee on April 25 that the work is at least three weeks behind.

“The contractor wasn’t able to start sweeping the streets because we can’t until the gutters are no longer frozen,” said Hernen.

“It’s a challenge every year because everyone thinks it should be done overnight and it’s not possible,” said Mayor Scott Aitchison. “One of the hiccups that drives me particularly to distraction is the fact that we can be doing our street sweeping everywhere and the busiest street in our town [Main Street] is owned by somebody else and they get to it when they are good and ready. So our back streets that we maintain can be done and the Main Street still looks like a gravel road.” Muskoka Road 3, of which Main Street is part, is a District road. Aitchison wondered if there was another solution.

Hernen said that he could have a discussion with the contractor to try to expedite Main Street clean up, and added that crews will be working to complete Town roads as quickly as possible.
