Shhh, it may be a surprise, but family and friends of grade seven and eight students at Huntsville Public School are likely to receive something sweet smelling at their next special occasion.
The HPS students partnered with Soapstones Natural Skincare, a locally owned manufacturer and retailer of a line of luxurious natural soaps, lotions, facial care, foot care, and bath products, to raise money for their year-end school trips.
“It was a win-win for us,” said HPS teacher Trish Henderson. “They have a great product and we made a great amount toward the trip.” In fact, the class earned $1393 that will be used to off set the cost of their trips. The grade 7 class with be attending the YMCA camp in Bala while the grade 8 class will enjoy some time in Toronto.
The kids were given the opportunity to sell Soapstones’ line of lotion, body wash and bars of soap in exchange for a share of the profits. The purchases were individually packaged in red organza bags ready for delivery. What was the most popular scent you ask? “The Pink Sugar; always the Pink Sugar,” store manager Maryanne Smith and Henderson answered in unison.
This kind of community partnership is an ongoing endeavour of Soapstones, explained David McLean, who along with his wife Joanne, owns the company. “The development of youth leadership is the focal point of our philanthropy,” explained David. “We had designated that area of endeavour from the very start when we took over the business. We saw this as a way in which we could partner and help out students in their growth and development. That will remain the hallmark of Soapstones for always. My wife and I always wish to contribute back to youth leadership.”
The McLeans welcome any organization that is aligned with their mission to develop youth leadership to contact them, promising that if there is a fit they will do their best to help them out.
