Muskoka/Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services needs your help. The agency is overwhelmed with the number of women who seek their help and are looking at ways to raise money for programming. On February 14, they’ll be holding a skate-a-thon at Memorial Park in Bracebridge from 4 to 7 p.m. with funds raised helping women across Muskoka.
“We’re going to have music, we’re going to have hot chocolate. People are welcome to come out. We will speak about sexual violence,” said the organization’s Executive Director, Lauren Power,,adding that some of the speeches will likely reference a recent report on the number of sexual assault allegations dropped by police.
The event forms part of the One Billion Rising initiative. “One Billion Rising is the global event to raise awareness regarding sexual violence,” explained Power. “So we have seven billion people in the world and one in three women experience sexual assault – so that’s one billion people. The ‘rising’ is to speak out, to raise awareness, to fight against. This year’s theme is to fight against the exploitation of women.”
