It’s a day nine-year-old Owen McKay won’t soon forget. After launching a pumpkin in the annual Sandhill Nursery pumpkin slingshot contest, his name was drawn as the winner of a $500 Sandhill gift card. He’s planning to purchase a birch tree, says Sandhill’s owner, Tim Cantelon.
The contest was part of Sandhill’s annual fall festival in October. Festival goers could purchase a pumpkin for two dollars or three pumpkins for five dollars and then use the slingshot to launch it 60 to 80 feet toward a target in the field. All proceeds were donated to Community Living Huntsville; on Saturday, November 18, Cantelon presented CLH executive director, Cathy Stroud, with a cheque for $1,000.
“It’s a fun addition to our festival and this year we wanted an organization involved to help out,” said Cantelon. “I’m a big fan (of Community Living Huntsville) and a huge supporter.”
The day won’t soon be forgotten by Community Living Huntsville either. Volunteers were there to hand out pumpkins and enjoy the fun.
“The money is awesome and we are so thankful for that,” said Stroud, “but the inclusion that comes from these events, there’s no price we could put on that. The feedback we got was how delighted everyone was to be part of this and how much fun everyone had. It goes way beyond the money, we are so thankful to be included and involved.”
