Rotary challenges residents, businesses to COVID-safe community clean-up

With spring comes showers and flowers…and roadside garbage.

The Rotary Club of Huntsville Evening Satellite Club is organizing a Huntsville-wide garbage clean-up — Team Up to Clean Up — to rid roadsides of a winter’s worth of debris.

The club hopes that community members of all ages will step up and get involved.

The COVID-safe clean-up will be held on Saturday, May 15 and Saturday, May 22.

One of Rotary’s six main pillars is the environment, and a spring garbage clean-up has been a club activity for many years. This year, they want to get even more people involved.

“I believe this can be bigger,” says club chairperson Jennifer Jerrett. “We are challenging everyone to get involved. This includes businesses as well.”

As a group clean-up isn’t possible, Jerrett says they are hoping staff members who are already in a pod together and individual households will get on board.

To help add a community aspect to the event, the club is encouraging everyone to take photos and tag them on social media (@peopleofactionhuntsville on Facebook and Instagram) so they can put a compilation together after the event.

Suggested clean-up locations include:

-store fronts or areas surrounding businesses,
-parks,
-parking lots,
-local schools,
-rural roads, and
-subdivisions.

“We all live, work, and play here so we believe it’s important to give back to our environment and pick up each spring,” said Jerrett, “Lots of hands make light work.”

Property Prep Canada, a Huntsville-owned and operated company, has donated clean-up kits toward the cause. Email [email protected] to reserve one to pick up in town on the days of the clean-up.

The Rotary Club of Huntsville Evening Satellite Club comprises 25 members who meet twice a month for an hour. When COVID is not present, their mandate is about having boots on the ground amongst the community. In the past some of their projects have included painting the Huntsville Hospice building, revitalizing the memorial garden at Community Living Huntsville, and volunteering at the COVID testing centre. Businesses or individuals interested in joining the satellite club can email [email protected].
