According to Natural Resources Canada, a major geomagnetic storm watch (https://www.spaceweather.gc.ca/info-gen/glossa-en.php) is in effect from 10 May 2024, 19:00 EDT to 11 May 2024, 19:00 EDT.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has also issued a G4 geomagnetic storm watch for today. That’s the severity rating, which is the second strongest on the severity scale, which runs from G1 to G5, with G5 being the highest. It also means widespread auroras are possible.
Authorities have been monitoring a series of solar flares that began on May 8 and are predicting a severe geomagnetic storm today, which could also result in potential disruptions to communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio, and satellite operations. “Additional solar eruptions could cause geomagnetic storm conditions to persist through the weekend,” noted NOAA in a release on Thursday.
